Academism - 1) purely theoretical orientation in scientific and educational activities, isolation from practice, from the requirements of life;
2) the direction in the art of the XVII-XIX centuries., established in the academies of arts, based on dogmatic adherence to the canons of art of antiquity and the Renaissance (RENAISSANCE); Academism opposed in the 19th century, progressive realistic art. Such qualities as inspiration, artistic discovery, expression of drawing and brushstroke, coloristic gift were considered alien to the school, academic system. Some of the qualities inherent in academism can already be seen in such works of sculpture of late ancient Greek art (Hellenism) as" Aphrodite of Milo"," Laocoon"," Bull Farnese", which were later considered the main examples in academic art. Actually, academism began to take shape in Italy at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries in the first art academies of the Carracci brothers, the Zuccaro brothers, and others as a means to resist the arbitrariness and subjectivism of the Mannerists. In the 17th century, the formation of the Royal Academy of painting and sculpture in France turned academism into a leading dogmatic system, which was followed by the newly formed academies of other countries. In Russia, academism was not as powerful as it was. in France (where its world-famous leaders were Charles Lebrun, Jacques-Louis David, Dominique Ingres), but in the second quarter and mid-XIX century. K. Brullov, F. Bruni, K. Neff developed a system of Russian academism.
